We have seen great advances in science and technology in recent decades. Just about everything, it seems, is better than is used to be. That goes for endodontic, or root canal, treatment – but not everyone seems to know it. Rest assured, root canal treatment at Cascade Endodontics in Orem are routine, and mostly painless.
The most common reason root canal treatment is performed is that an ordinary cavity has gone too deep into a tooth. When that happens the tooth’s pulp can become infected.
The pulp is the soft tissue within each tooth. It consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp.
Many people still seem to think they cause the pain. Happily, that is not true. Modern rotary files, apex locators, and digital radiographs make them easier than ever. Local anasthetics numb the area being treated. For most patients, a root canal is not much different than having a cavity filled.
But we recognize that everyone has a different pain threshold, and that a patient’s expectation may be part of that threshold. That’s why we offer different types of sedation dentistry:
- Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, which has been used in dentistry for more than one hundred years.
- Oral conscious sedation, which involves taking a prescribed sedative before treatment.
- IV sedation, which is administered through a needle, and puts the patient in a deep state of relaxation.
Root canals are performed nearly fifteen million times each year, and they relieve a lot of pain. To find out more, please contact us at Cascade Endodontics in Orem, and don’t hesitate to ask about sedation dentistry. Call our office today!
