You need a root canal, and you’re scared. Who hasn’t heard horror stories about how painful they are, like some kind of medieval torture? At Cascade Endodontics in Orem, we specialize in root canal therapy, and we can assure you they do not live up to their terrible reputation.
It can be hard to measure such things, but it may be that a big part of the fear has to do with not knowing what’s involved. But knowledge is power, so keep reading!
A Straightforward Procedure
Root canals are not all that complicated. The most important thing to remember is that the procedure is done to save an infected or damaged tooth. We do that by cleaning out the infection inside, filling the space that leaves, and sealing it.
Teeth that have had a root canal can last a lifetime.
No Pain. Most patients say their root canals were virtually painless – not much different than having a cavity filled.
One reason for that is modern anesthetics. They are better than ever. We begin with a local anesthetic, and that’s enough for a lot of patients. We also have stronger options, like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Full disclosure: you may experience some discomfort once the anesthetic wears off. This is normal, and can be controlled with over-the-counter medication. It’s usually gone within a week or two.
One Appointment. Root canals are usually completed in just one appointment. It takes about two hours to complete the procedure. You may need to schdedule a follow-up for a crown or filling, but in simple cases everything can be done in just one session.
Fear of the unknown is usually not very logical. The facts are that at Cascade Endodontics in Orem, root canals don’t live up to their reputation, and sedation is always an option. Call today!
