At Cascade Endodontics in Orem UT, we know that root canal treatment can be a big deal. Even though we do not subscribe to the idea that they are exceptionally painful, even we must admit that the healing period afterward can range from mildly annoying to incredibly cumbersome. We are here to help!
Our team has put together a list of tips for your aftercare routine, so you can ensure that this is the last root canal you have and that no endodontic retreatment is necessary. If you or your loved one has recently had to undergo root canal therapy, check out this list!
Tips for Proper Endodontic Aftercare
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: These can help manage your pain safely and most of them are non-addictive.
- Soft Foods: It might be annoying, but sticking to pureed foods and soups is a good way to avoid re-infection of the area and manage sensitivity around the wound. Avoid sticky and brittle food, and make sure you don’t expose your teeth to any extreme temperatures.
- Good Dental Hygiene: Though it is unwise to brush or floss the area too much, especially soon after the procedure, we still encourage our patients to keep it as clean as possible. As soon as it has healed enough, resume care for it as you would for any other tooth. This can prevent bacteria from infecting any tender sections of your gum-line or tooth structure.
- Rest: Like any major healthcare procedure, you need rest after a root canal. Your mouth needs plenty of time to recover and heal any invasive trauma. If you participate in sports, consider taking a break until the tooth has healed. If this is not possible, consider a mouthguard. Try your best to lead a relaxed life to avoid any dental work getting damaged.
If you’ve had a root canal, it’s not the end of the world. If anything, it’s the beginning of a pain-free life. Stay positive and keep your eye on the prize: a healthy smile that no longer causes you any discomfort and pain. With a little time, you’ll be good as new.
