Sometimes when patients find out they need a root canal to treat a seriously decayed or damaged tooth, they think it might be better to have that tooth extracted. At Cascade Endodontics in Orem we say that it is always better to save the natural tooth.
The reasoning of these patients is often centered on dental implants. Implants are a remarkable technology; the artificial teeth they support look and function like the real thing. That said, there is nothing better than having a natural tooth.
Extractions are Invasive!
First of all, remember that extraction is an invasive procedure. There is usually considerable bleeding once the tooth is pulled. While most patients begin to feel better after a few days, it can take weeks for the extraction site to fully heal.
A root canal, on the other hand, is not nearly as invasive. Don’t be fooled by their bad reputations. Modern root canals are nearly painless; most people agree they’re not much different than having a cavity filled. They have a high success rate, and repaired tooth can last a lifetime.
For patients thinking about replacing a pulled tooth with an implant, be advised that root canals are much more cost-effective. And they take a lot less time, start-to-finish.
At Cascade Endodontics in Orem we have saved many teeth with root canals. Please call our office to schedule an appointment today!
