A fractured tooth sounds serious, and it can be. Teeth can crack as a result of trauma or from biting a hard object, or from clenching your jaw. We have effective treatment for cracked teeth at Cascade Endodontics in Orem.
A cracked tooth can actually be hard to diagnose. It’s really a generic term for different types of fractures. If you think you have a cracked tooth, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis and to seek treatment.
Different Types of Cracks
- Craze Lines are surface cracks on the hard outer layer of a tooth (the enamel). They are quite common, and don’t usually cause any problems. Treatment is not usually necessary.
- Fractured Cusp. Cusps are part of the chewing surface of a molar. They can become weakened and break off. They are not usually serious, and we can treat them with a dental crown.
- Split Tooth. These are complete fractures of a tooth; the crack has extended down and separated the tooth into segments. It’s a serious condition, and unfortunately a split tooth must be extracted.
- Vertical Root Fractures extend from a tooth’s root, where is begins, up toward the chewing surface. They don’t usually cause any pain. People often don’t even know they’re there until the surrounding bone and gums get inflamed. They usually need to be pulled, but sometimes endodontic microsurgery can save part of it.
